Hazel & Paul 28th April 2023

I first visited the Horse and Groom in 1990 as I'd moved down to study. I ordered a BLT on doorstep bread with massive rashers of bacon for only a couple of quid that made a skint Scouse student away from home very happy. I couldn't believe when I found out years later that Simon & Dosh had been running it for less than a year. You both remembered my drinks next time I came, and when I became a regular were dismayed when I went on diets/periods of abstinence so the Carlsberg you'd poured upon seeing me coming was not required. I remember your kindness Dosh one birthday where I had a group of 18 friends coming to help me celebrate and had asked if we could have some cooked snacks and I would pay for the damage. Cue hot sausage rolls, cheese, crisps and chips. When I went to pay you said it was your birthday present. I especially liked when you got annoyed by something and came over and had a grumble. Or how you fed treats to all the animals of Wivenhoe apart from the ones that snatched food (you still gave them a chance) so when you were on holiday dogs would look mournfully through the kitchen window hoping to see you. We thought you were just bloody great Doshie and we will both miss you x
